Focused Sector(s): Water, Sanitation, Livelihood
Project: Water for Life and Livelihood
Date and duration: April 2012, April 2013, April 2014 (6 months each)
Location: Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra
Beneficiaries: 328 families

Problem(s)

  • The West Sumatra Earthquake in 2009 caused damage to homes, communal structures and water systems, as well as irrigation systems that farming communities depended on
  • More than 10,000 farming families in Padang Pariaman experienced damage to their homes. Damage to irrigation systems, meanwhile, affected agricultural activities while landslides impacted rivers and spring water sources

Intervention and Impact

  • Constructed a borehole and water reservoir, and installed a hydraulic ram pump. This not only improved access to clean, potable water but also fed irrigation systems, enhancing income opportunities
  • Constructed a toilet block and hand washing point in a school, and implemented hygiene awareness activities resulting in improved hygiene practices

Cost: S$152,500
