Date: January 2011

Relentless monsoon rains in January 2011 triggered severe flooding in the eastern part of Sri Lanka, killing over 40 people and forcing 400,000 to abandon their homes. More than a million people were affected in all, almost half of them children. Mercy Relief responded to appeals for aid made by the Ministry of Disaster Management via the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore. Together with volunteers from the Mahakaruna Buddhist Society, we focused our efforts on the badly-hit cities of Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Vavuniya.

Partner(s): Mahakaruna Buddhist Society, Singapore Government, Ministry of Disaster Management, Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore, Sri Lankan Airlines
