Date: May 2009

The Sri Lankan government’s armed conflict with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) came to an end after 25 years in May 2009, following the death of the LTTE’s leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. The conflict had torn the country apart and led to an exodus from the conflict zones. Close to 300,000 people fled their homes, and the Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore made an appeal for humanitarian assistance following the worsening of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) crisis. Mercy Relief responded and was the only foreign NGO permitted access to Vavuniya, the area with the highest concentration of IDPs.

Partner(s): Sarvodaya Shramadana, Sri Lankan National Water Supply and Distribution Board

How we helped:

  • Sent a relief team to assess the situation on the ground in Vavuniya, and to deliver aid and medical supplies
  • Alleviated the acute water shortage by providing 10 units of wells with Pneumatic Jack pumps
