Ethnic unrest in the state of Rakhine and armed conflict in Kachin forced many innocents onto the streets, without access to food, water and shelter. According to official reports, over 200,000 people, a third of this number, children, were displaced by the conflicts. Tens of thousands of others were simultaneously being displaced in nine other states/regions due to severe flooding caused by heavy monsoon rains that year. Official figures put this number at 65,000.
