In December 2006, the unusually heavy monsoon period culminated in a phenomenal rise in tidal inflow. This resulted in floods and mudslides, leaving some 23,000 people displaced and cutting off access to clean water.

Responding to the precarious flood situation in Johor Bahru, MR sent a convoy of 9 vehicles together with the Land Rover Club to Muar, one of the worst affected areas. The team spent 7 days in Muar and Batu Pahat supporting the relief efforts initiated by local partner, Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia). They supplemented Mercy Malaysia’s humanitarian efforts with 3,000 hygiene kits, milk and cereal supplies, 100 units of water filters, and conducted nutrition programmes for the children and elderly. These contributions amounted to $33,500.

Together, the team serviced 6 evacuation centres in Muar, Batu Pahat, Grisik and Sugei Raya that housed 5,000 internally displaced people (IDPs). MR complemented Mercy Malaysia’s team by providing logistical support for its aid supplies distribution at the various evacuation centres and also helped set up the medical warehouse.
