The flash floods that hit the North Sumatran district of Bahorok in November 2003 triggered devastating landslides that killed 245, displaced thousands, and destroyed a renowned Orangutan Sanctuary which was not only the largest for the endangered Sumatran orangutans, but also a significant source of tourism dollars.
