Project: Treatment of Contaminated Water for Village Consumption
Date and duration: July 2010 / 10 months
Location: 8B Village, Dien Nam Trung Commune, Dien Ban District, Quang Nam Province
Beneficiaries: 600 villagers from 151 households

Problem(s)

  • Potable water was unaffordable in villages like 8B
  • Villagers turned to the river as their main source of drinking water. This was despite it being heavily contaminated with aluminium and iron. It was not uncommon for residents to suffer from kidney stones and skin diseases

Intervention and Impact

  • Constructed a water supply and treatment system for the community, giving them access to clean and safe drinking water.
  • Conducted awareness programmes in schools so students understood the harmful effects of drinking contaminated water, and the importance of avoiding it.
