December 2002
With institutional partners, the Singapore Soka Association (SSA), Mercy Relief sent a developmental team of youths from Mercy Relief, SSA and the Youth Expedition Programme (YEP) of the SIF. The 31-member team, ‘Riding the Rapids', spent three weeks refurbishing the Aspeca Orphanage in Takeo, conducting early childhood development and educational programmes and mentoring members of the Khmer Youth Association.
June 2003
Mercy Relief implemented short- to medium-term projects in Takeo and Kandal provinces which included the building of wells and schools; the acquisition of rice fields, farming tools and animals; and the improving of water sanitation systems in the area. This project, worth S$60,000, was aimed at providing locals with the means to a sustainable livelihood.
November - December 2003
Together with the SSA, Mercy Relief organized another youth expedition to Takeo. Riding the Rapids II was a continuation of the work done at the same orphanage. More repair, refurbishment and installation work was done in and around the premises - including the construction of a drainage system around the perimeter of the orphanage.
February 2004
2 school were completed in the Kampong Thom and Kampong Cham area and officially opened by Mercy Relief Chairman (2003-2007), Mr Zulkifli Baharudin, and Provincial Governor of Kampong Cham, HE Cheong Om. Books and stationery were distributed to more than 500 students in these schools.
In recognition of Mercy Relief's work in Cambodia, the Cambodian Prime Minister's Office conferred the Gold Community Service Award to Mercy Relief in March 2004.
October 2004
To equip local Khmer youths with the skills to provide them better employment opportunities. 24 Singaporean youth volunteers were deployed in Siem Reap to construct a high-temperature kiln, pottery house and kiln studio for a Handicraft Training Centre (Proleng Khmer). Speaker of Parliament and Advisor to Mercy Relief, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, accompanied by Mr Lawrence Anderson, Singapore's Ambassador to Cambodia, and Mr Chap Nhalyvoud, Governor of Siem Reap, were present to witness the ceremony. In October 2005, master potter, Jalil Iskandar, was invited to conduct pottery workshops at the centre.
January 2005
Mercy Relief provided food relief to more than 600 poverty-stricken people whose crops and produce have been destroyed in the monsoon.
Indonesia
November 2003
Mercy Relief responded to the flash floods in Bahorok, Sumatra by raising S$18,000 for the acquisition of construction materials for the rebuilding of homes, and the distribution of food, personal hygiene packs, blankets and children treat packs.
February 2004
Fresh meat from 200 sheep was distributed to the survivors of the Baharok floods and the Acehnese who have been displaced by political conflict.
June - December 2004
29 youths from Singapore were sent to Medan on a 15-day expedition to Medan to build extensions to the overcrowded dormitories of an orphanage, conduct educational programmes and provide further food relief.
2 more expeditions were sent in December 2004 to refurbish and conduct English and IT lessons at 4 orphanages. A total of 60 youths spent 18 days interacting and bonding with the children while they built rooms in the orphanages. Doctors and dental nurses were also sent to medical and dental check-ups for the children.
May - July 2006
Mercy Relief sent a total of 4 medical teams to Central Java to assist at the evacuation centres near Mt Merapi as the local population braced for the volcano's eruption. The team was still in the region when an earthquake struck Bantul. Medical as well as relief supplies worth S$15,000 were distributed and infrastructure projects at the evacuation centres worth S$5,000 were carried out. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in which Mercy Relief pledged S$75,000 towards the rebuilding of a primary school in the Klaten District was signed on 13 October 2006.
July 2006
Following the earthquake and consequent tsunami in West Java, Mercy Relief sent a relief team with supplies like tents, blankets and hygiene packs worth S$30,000 to 300 beneficiaries.
Myanmar
October 2004
A preliminary mission was sent to Yangon to verify projects listed by Myanmar's Ministry of Social Welfare. Through CEDS (Myanmar), Mercy Relief purchased sewing machines, computers, blankets, mosquito nets and coils for 200 children in government-run homes.
October 2005
A team of youth volunteers was sent to Grace Home in Bago, to set up a computer lab and formulate a syllabus in basic computer skills for 150 children.
The Philippines
December 2004
A youth expedition team with 27 volunteers was sent to Iloilo City to set up a poultry farm as part of the economic sustenance programme for the squatter population. This project cost S$5,000.
Mercy Relief also visited Umiray Village in Quezon province to assess relief projects in the typhoon-stricken locale. S$10,000 worth of medicines and blankets was donated to the local. Mercy Relief also assisted in the distribution of relief to 1,200 affected people.
Thailand
November 2004
A preliminary mission was sent to a government nursing home in Parkred which housed abandoned children.
January 2005
Mercy Relief provided Qurban Food Aid, worth S$46,600 to over 2,000 poverty-stricken people in Haadyai.
