PROJECT - SOUTH ASIA

 

Bangladesh

May 2001
Mercy Relief adopted and maintained 7 orphans in Dhaka.

November 2004
A preliminary mission to flood-affected areas in the outskirt town of Daud Kandi was conducted.

India

December 2003
Mercy Relief supported a youth expedition initiated by the Young Sikh Association (Singapore) by providing 8 cartons of brand-new winter wear for the needy young and elderly in Punjab.

November 2004
A preliminary mission was undertaken to a coastal village on the Sundarbands which had been affected by a flood in September 2004. The team distributed S$5,000 worth of warm clothing and food supplies to children living in a run-down dormitory of an orphanage in the neighbouring village of Ullon.

Maldives

September 2005
2,000 Playpacks were distributed with the aim of restoring normalcy to the children’s lives in the aftermath of the tsunami. The Packpacks contained both educational and recreational items to help the children return to school.

Pakistan

October 2005 - July 2006
In response to the South Asian earthquake on 8 October 2005, Mercy Relief partnered the Singapore Red Cross Society (SRCS) and in collaboration with SingHealth, Parkway Group Healthcare, National Healthcare Group, NVPC and SIF to organize and deploy 5 medical missions of 48 volunteer doctors, nurses, logisticians and generalists to Muzaffarabad between October and November 2005.

The relief teams attended to the medical needs of victims at a field hospital managed by Mercy Relief’s local partner, Pakistani Islamic Medical Association (PIMA), as well as the Abbas Tertiary Hospital, a Pakistani Ministry of Health facility.

A total of S$222,000 worth of relief supplies were sent and distributed to the quake survivors though the Pakistani Armed Forces, PIMA and The Citizen’s Foundation (TCF). This project was done in collaboration with the Singapore Pakistani Association, Ba’alwi Mosque, Pakistani International Airlines and the High Commission for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Singapore. These supplies included winterized tents, blankets, medicine, sleeping bags, medical equipment and food supplies.

In July 2006, 20,000 Playpacks were distributed to schoolchildren in the Muzaffarabad and Battal areas. This distributed was supported by Mediacorp Radio and Cargill International.

Sri Lanka

July 2002 - July 2003
4 volunteers were sent to Colombo and Kandy for early childhood development and educational programmes.

January 2005
A preliminary assessment of relief projects was made in the tsunami-affected region of Galle. In partnership with the Singapore Soka Association, Mercy Relief distributed more than S$5,000 worth of NTUC food packs and necessities to the internally-displace people (IDP) camps.

September 2005
2,000 Playpacks were distributed to the schoolchildren in Galle to cater to their educational and recreational needs.
