"In 2006, 427 natural disasters were reported worldwide which killed a total of 23,833 people. The combined death toll from natural and technological disasters was 33,733, with natural disasters accounting for 70 per cent of the fatalities. During 2006, 27 disasters (nine windstorms, nine droughts, eight floods and one earthquake) affected more than 1 million people each. Twenty of these disasters occurred in Asia, while the seven remaining disasters were all droughts that occurred in Africa."
